Nailing a podcast interview isn’t always easy though, so to help our authors get it right, we have put together our top 10 tips for podcast preparation:

  1. Know Your Audience: Research your podcast. Who are the listeners? Tailor your message to resonate with them. It’s all about connection.
  2. Craft Your Elevator Pitch: Nail that succinct description of your book and write it down before your interview. You want to grab attention in just a few sentences—think of it as your book's hook.
  3. Share Personal Stories: People love anecdotes, and people buy from people! Weave in personal experiences related to your book's themes. It makes your message relatable and memorable.
  4. Engage with Energy: Your enthusiasm is contagious! Use a lively tone and inflection to keep the conversation dynamic. Remember, you're not just talking; you’re entertaining.
  5. Prepare Key Points: Jot down the main ideas you want to convey, but keep it loose. You want to sound natural, not rehearsed. Think of it as a friendly chat rather than a lecture.

UK book launch event for Happy Economics

We were delighted to attend the launch of new business book by Lord Mark Price

Yesterday, The Book Publicist’s Senior Campaigns Manager Jess Haycox had a whistlestop trip down to London to celebrate the launch of Happy Economics, the brilliant new book from our client Mark Price, published by Kogan Page.

Hosted in the House of Lords, Jess joined guests from across the business world as Mark spoke about his motivation for writing the book and stressed the importance of investing in our people to protect and improve their happiness. The weather seemed to be in sync with the book’s cheerful message, with a sunny afternoon providing the perfect backdrop to a fantastic event. Jess was thrilled to be going behind the scenes of the parliament buildings and to celebrate the book being out in the world.

The Book Publicist and Mark’s team have been working together for two months and have sparked conversations about workplace happiness levels around the world, with coverage in The Times, BBC World News, Newstalk, and multiple business and leadership publications.

Why summer is a great time for book PR

Summertime is more than just sunshine and holidays; it's also a prime opportunity to boost media coverage for your book!

It’s a myth that the summer is a quiet time for the media, and at The Book Publicist we are still busy as ever running campaigns for authors and experts.

We love to work on brilliant non-fiction book campaigns, and so far this summer we have secured some great coverage, including a stunning feature in the New Scientist for the Eden Project’s 102 Things to Do With A Hole In The Ground and in The Ecologist.

There have also been lots of articles and interviews in the parenting and lifestyle press such as Netmums, Green Parent and BBC Radio Wales for children’s mental health expert Rachel Coler Mulholland, author of The Birds, the Bees, and the Elephant in the Room for US publisher Union Square & Co.

The Focus Fix has been a joy to work on with long-time client Chris Griffith and Caragh Medlicott. We were delighted to secure them coverage for their book in lots of publications, including the print edition of Prima, The Daily Mirror, Sunday Express and in the women’s weekly magazine, Chat!

3 easy ways to promote your book this summer

If you want to get ahead this summer and get more PR for your book here are 3 easy ways you can get both you and your book in the media.

1. #journorequests – this popular hashtag on X (Twitter) is a great way to connect with journalists looking for experts on a wide range of topics. Just type it in to the search bar on X and see if you might be just the person a journalist is looking for. If you can help reply to them and they will get back to you if you are the right fit.

2. Topical hooks – again like with the #journorequests the media are always looking for experts to comment on news stories or awareness days. Keep an eye out on X or LinkedIn for journalists looking for the right expert to comment and you could find yourself being quoted in the national media with a mention for your book or business.

3. Your expertise - if you have a topic you are passionate about or credentials that make you an expert, then think a couple of months ahead and get in touch with the publication you like or a journalist and offer to write them a practical advice article they can publish.

      We are pleased to share the news that Jessica Jones has been appointed Head of Publisher Campaigns – a new role created to focus on adding more value to the non-fiction publishers we work with.

      Jessica has been playing an integral role in delivering high profile publicity campaigns over the last 7 years but has been promoted as part of the company’s commitment to growing and developing strong relationships with publishers in the UK, the US and beyond.

      With her new responsibilities she will oversee all publisher campaigns to make sure our partnership with in-house teams deliver a service that supports each publishers' sales and marketing and objectives, as well as delivering excellent author care.

      Now 15 years old, The Book Publicist has worked with a huge number of publishers around the world, specialising in book launch PR campaigns as well as working longer term, direct with authors.

      Alongside her campaign work, Jessica will use her expertise in working with publishers to advise on campaign strategies, delivering high impact media campaigns, exclusives and serialisations, and will lead on developing new services and products to benefit publisher partners.

      Jessica began her career in publicity at The Book Publicist in 2017 and after a two- and half-year stint working at Oxford University Press she returned to the company in 2022.

What a busy and buzzy month it has been and a huge amount of fun as we secured absolutely heaps of coverage for our authors, publishers and thought leader clients across the media.

      Just today The Times has published the wise words of the brilliant Leanne Maskell (ADHD at Work), the driving force behind the ADHD movement in the UK and an expert who is now one of the go-to-experts in neurodiversity.

      We loved working on the topics of wellbeing and health and this month Dr Romi Ran, author of Bite Sized Peace: Change How You Eat, Accept Your Body, Transform Your Life has been in demand talking all thing eating, body image and mental health in the run up to Eating Disorder Awareness week in February. Romi has been interviewed in Women’s Health, Top Sante, Hello!, S Magazine and Good to Know, to name a few and breathwork teacher and psychotherapist Carolyn Cowan (Breathing for Pregnancy, Ebury) had a stunning 4-page spread in Platinum magazine this week sharing how breathwork can help reset the stress response.

      It’s been exciting to be working on the book publicity for The Complete Air Fryer Cook Book (White Lion) with the queen of air fryers Sam Milner. People (including us) have gone nuts for the game-changing kitchen gadget and it’s been exciting sharing recipes and tips with the media such as Woman & Home, T3, HuffPost, Ideal Home, Saga, who have ALL the questions including can you cook a pancake in an air fryer and just what are the must-have accessories?

      There have been a vast array of fantastic opportunities for all our business and HR authors in the high-profile business press and beyond such as articles and interviews in Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, Inc, CEO Today, Management Today, Edge and many more.

      James Scouller author of the Winning Teams trilogy has had a very busy month with coverage in Forbes, People Management, Arabian Business, HR Futures and Dr Susan Khan author of Reinvent Yourself (Kogan Page) has been sharing her wisdom in Stylist, Forbes, Management Today, Welldoing as well as many more

      Talking of coverage in the nationals we secured an impressive spread in the Daily Mail for Ryan Hopkins new book, 52 Weeks of Wellbeing (Kogan Page) and also got him featured in iNews, Metro, Inc, Management Today and interviewed on lots of BBC radio stations.

      The Sun newspaper was a great place for our authors this month with diversity and inclusion specialists, Enolla’s Paul Anderson-Walsh sharing his advice with readers on what managers need to know about respecting people’s religious beliefs at work. A Career Carol authors Helmut Schuster and David Oxley had great fun also talking to The Sun about how to find a career you love as did Bad Bosses Ruin Lives authors Debra and Ken Corey when they were asked to share with the readers what to do when you have a bad boss.

      As you can see we work with a wide variety of non-fiction authors and range of experts. One minute we could be talking about social impact with Ildiko Almasi Simsic author of What is Social Impact? (Cap de Nice Press) and securing coverage in Fast Company or the Reuters newsletter Sustainable Switch or talking about empathy in the workplace with Mimi Nicklin or organising a feature in a national newspaper like we did this week for retired GP, Martin Stagg who has just published his memoir The Real Doc Martin (Whitefox).

      We have had an incredible year at The Book Publicist and are celebrating securing huge amounts of publicity in 2023 right across the global media for our wonderful authors, publishers and thought leader clients.

      As we head towards the end of 2023 the team at The Book Publicist are as busy as ever sharing the work of the very best non-fiction authors and the great minds and ideas of thought leaders.

      November has been a brilliant month as we secured coverage in the top business and consumer publications including working on a very seasonal article in Forbes on How To Thaw The “Frozen Middle” Of Management. We welcomed back one of our favourite author experts, Dr Audrey Tang, as she published her new book The Leader’s Guide to Wellbeing (FT Publishing) and the media were quick to snap up opportunities to hear from her. Highlights of the campaign so far include The Daily Telegraph, HR Grapevine, The HR Director as well as an extract in the brilliant LinkedIn Book Club.

      Psychologist Thijs Launspach author of Crazy Busy (Capstone) had a bumper month of filling the media pages this November with articles sharing his expertise on the secrets to stress relief for Stress Awareness Week. From Stylist to, LinkedIn Book Club to Harvard Business Review and The Sun and on the BBC. We've kept Thijs busy (but avoiding burnout)!

      Two of our other longstanding terrific expert thought leaders have also been kept busy as we organised media coverage opportunities in the UK press and beyond. Talking on the fascinating topic of empathy and why it is so important, Mimi Nicklin was featured in the Harvard Business Review, Stylist, Fabulous Magazine, iNews and the Belfast Telegraph to name a few. D&I expert Yetunde Hofmann has been talking to Fast Company, Decision Magazine, The Press Association, Training Journal on how to amplify minority voices in the workplace and the top mistakes HR leaders make when they're trying to implement their DE&I strategies. Brilliant work!

      Career experts David Oxley & Helmut Schuster have had a fantastic month talking to the media about the topics in their new book A Career Carol (Austin Macauley). The media have loved their interviews and comments and it’s been great to pitch them to our media contacts as they have so many ideas. Great to see them in Fast Company, People Management, Forbes, Minute Hack, Stylist, Indian Management – to name a few!

      Amy has joined the team this week in the role of Senior Campaigns Manager and comes directly from a book publisher where she led on a wide range of marketing & PR.       October is always a busy time for us with lots of new books publishing and fresh expert and thought leader PR campaigns gearing up for autumn with plenty of opportunities to secure high-profile national media coverage for our brilliant clients. It’s buzzy and we love it!

      With Breast Cancer Awareness Month and ADHD Awareness Month in the diary this October there have been lots of opportunities for our wonderful authors and experts to share their experience and knowledge. It was an absolute joy to watch the incredible Dr Liz O’Riordan, the breast cancer surgeon who had breast cancer, on TV talking to Lorraine about her stunning memoir Under the Knife (Unbound) and to hear her busting cancer myths on Radio Scotland and in the HuffPost.

      ADHD aficionado Leanne Maskell was lighting up the media spotlight once more spreading her passion for educating the world about dealing with neurodiversity. The media have been loving Leanne’s new book ADHD at Work and have invited her to share her expertise with highlights including HuffPost, SheerLuxe and HR publication People Management.

      We have really enjoyed working with executive coach Patrice Gordon on promoting her book Reverse Mentoring (Little, Brown). Highlights for Patrice have been being interviewed on BBC Business Live and in Forbes, Fast Company, People Management and in Stylist sharing how organisations can cultivate inclusive leadership and amplify underrepresented voices with this style of change.

      There have been some fantastic media opportunities across the board with the Harvard Business Review, CEO Today and Inc. Reviews for Matt Abrahams and Think Faster Talk Smarter (Pan Macmillan) in the Mail on Sunday, Prima and Management Today.

      Thijs Launspach author of Crazy Busy (Wiley) featured in the iPaper talking habit stacking and the signs of burnout, Bianca Miller-Cole and Dr Byron Cole were across the media with their book Rich Forever (John Murray) including Metro and Forbes and iNews. It was also great to see the authors of A Career Carol (Austin Macauley), David Oxley and Helmut Schuster sharing their ideas with HR Magazine, Indian Management and the LinkedIn Book Club and Alison Grieve and Jenni Miller author of Leading Edge (Practical Inspiration Publishing) and Lauren Neal author of Valued at Work (Practical Inspiration Publishing) everywhere from Forbes to the LinkedIn Book Club, Edge and CEO World and Stylist and HR Future and HR Magazine.

      As we wrap up September at The Book Publicist we are celebrating what has been a great month for our clients and authors with thought leader PR and book publicity.

      TV has been a big theme and has given us a real PR buzz as there’s nothing quite like securing a high profile media opportunity on the telly!

      Continuing with her huge launch success in August, Dr Lucy Ryan was on the Sky News breakfast sofa talking about working women and her brilliant book Revolting Women: Why Midlife Women are Walking Out (Practical Inspiration Publishing). Back on the box was Business Book of the Year 2023 winner Nicholas Janni (Leader as Healer, LID Publishing) who had a fantastic interview on BBC News International talking about compassionate leadership. Cyber-psychologist Dr Elaine Kasket has been a very popular media expert and was invited onto BBC News TV to get viewers thinking about the morality of the digital afterlife. It has been a busy campaign for Elaine and her book Reboot: Reclaiming Your Life in a Tech-Obsessed World (Elliot & Thompson) has had lots of interest from the media including a fantastic feature on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour talking about ‘Sharenting’ and how it affected the relationship with her young daughter.

      With a review in the Financial Times, a feature in inews, comment in Stylist and review in Management Today for Dr Lucy, a feature in the New Scientist for Dr Elaine followed by the Belfast Telegraph it’s been a busy time.

      Another inspirational doctor, Dr Liz O’Riordan (Under the Knife: Life Lessons from the Operating Theatre, Unbound) published a feature in Prima and HuffPost and coach Becky Hall (The Art of Enough, Practical Inspiration Publishing) talked about self-care in Stylist and empathy expert Mimi Nicklin (The MiMi You You Show) in the Independent, Stylist, Women’s Health and Grazia.

      Other highlights include ADHD Expert Leanne Maskell (ADHD: An A-Z) publishing a fantastically insightful article in HuffPost about managing neurodiversity at work and Think Faster Talk Smarter (Pan Macmillan) author Matt Abrahams shared his smart communication techniques in iPaper, Prima, Indian Management and Reader’s Digest.

      We always count ourselves very fortunate to work with great authors and experts and not only have learnt so much from them but feel privileged to help them share their wisdom with the press and world.       It’s been a hot month for media coverage at The Book Publicist this August with not one but two authors and experts making it into the much-coveted The Sunday Times!

      As soon as we saw Dr Lucy Ryan’s new book Revolting Women (Practical Inspirations Publishing) we just knew it would be a hit with the media and after only a week of pitching, as well as confirming The Sunday Times there was a media fervour with the phone ringing off the hook for more interviews!

      It seems 42 is the answer to everything when it comes to publicity as journalists and fans of the legendary author got excited about 42: The Wildly Improbable Ideas of Douglas Adams a new book published by Unbound and edited by Kevin Jon Davies! From The Sunday Times, The Observer, Daily MirrorSFX plus heaps of radio, it was a greta thrill to see the book hit The Sunday Times bestseller list too! It has been and continues to be a fun PR campaign to work on!

      There has been a huge spread of thought leader and book PR across the National and Global business media and many of our authors have been thrilled to see their books in the LinkedIn Book Club including Becky Hall with The Art of Enough (Practical Inspirations Publishing) and Sally Percy who is sharing her brilliant new book 21st Century Business Icons (Kogan Page) and Petra Velzeboer, Nicholas Janni, Sara Hope, Emily Cosgrove have all shared their favourite summer reads. A great publicity spot!

      As always every day is a school day at TBP when we are working with some of the greatest minds and thought leaders in business. It’s been fascinating to learn more about right brained thinking with Yda Bouvier and her fascinating book Leading with the Right Brain and the media loved the topic too with lots more coverage again this month in Stylist, Business Leader, People Management to name a few!

      Dr Elaine Kasket, Reboot: Reclaiming Your Life in a Tech-Obsessed World (Elliott & Thompson) has been in the teaching seat too sharing her wisdom and experience on how to reclaim your life in a tech obsessed world. Her article in The Guardian about sharing her child’s photo online went down a storm and is very timely as those obligatory back to school photos will start appearing in the next week. Elaine has been a very popular media expert with requests for comments in the Independent, Fast Company, New Statesman, Belfast Telegraph and absolutely heaps of broadcast!

      Other book publicity highlights include lots of publicity in the business and HR press with experts from the Corporate Research Forum appearing in Personnel Today talking HR fads and how much progress have we made in evidence-based HR in HR Magazine.

      We’ve also been wrapping up a brilliant campaign with Stuart McLachlan and Dean Sanders who hired us to work on the publicity for their brilliant book The Adventure of Sustainable Performance – all about ESG and leadership in disruptive times. It was a busy campaign with journalists keen to hear about their expertise in this area and coverage across a broad range of business and sustainability titles, highlights including features and interviews on BBC World News, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Reuters, The European, LinkedIn, Chartered Management Institute and Sustainable Future News.

      Experts from the Corporate Research Forum wrote in HR Magazine about challenging old assumptions of succession planning in HR Director and The People Space and the authors of The Next Leadership Team, Thomas Keil and Marianna Zangrillo (Routledge) were featured in Business Leader talking how to select, build, and optimise your top team and The Alignment Advantage author Richard Nugent talked how to transform your business strategy and culture.

      This month Antionette Oglethorpe author of Confident Careers Conversations, saw a series of advice pieces in Stylist as well as features and reviews in Forbes, Elite Business, Personnel Today, SME plus many more and yet another busy month for Becky Hall, author of The Art of Enough who was featured or interviewed by Forbes, Woman & Home; Women’s Health; Woman; Business Leader plus many more and Petra Velzeboer (Begin with You, Kogan Page) spoke to Metro about her life growing up in one of the world’s most notorious cults.

      As we say goodbye to June we are celebrating another fantastic month at The Book Publicist working on publicity campaigns for some incredibly talented and inspirational authors, experts and thought leaders.

      There has been a huge variety of campaigns on lots of topics keeping us super busy with coverage publishing right across the media from TV to high profile business magazines, lifestyle press, radio and podcasts.

      Highlights include Softening the Edge author Mimi Nicklin talking about using empathy to tackle loneliness in the workplace on BBC World Business Report, a round up of leadership advice from this year's Business Book Award winners in Forbes, the co-founder of WorkLifeWell Oliver Henry spoke to Fast Company about how leaders can attract top Gen Z talent with a robust wellbeing strategy and Antoinette Oglethorpe author of Confident Career Conversations shared in Fast Company why more bosses need to be asking their employees what they like to do at work!

      Our long term client, author of The Future Internet, Bernard Marr had another fantastic month with an article in Harvard Business Review talking how to Boost Your Productivity with Generative AI and in Metro sharing why we shouldn't fear a robot uprising! He spoke to Mail Online, People Management + more outlets about what are the 10 tech breakthroughs predicted to change our life this century.

      People Management were also keen to hear what Jo Nayler, senior research executive at the Corporate Research Forum had to say about what makes up the best-performing teams, author of Selling Creativity Rob King shared the five sales skills L&D teams need to promote in all employees and Catherine Garrod, author of Conscious Inclusion talked why staff networks can be an organisation's superpower.

      There was coverage in Edge, the journal from the Institute of Leadership & Management for a number of our clients and in The HR Director Adam Kingl author of Sparking Success spoke about the future of work and Helen Edwards author of From Marginal to Mainstream and Jeremy Campbell from the Black Isle Group shared with readers of Ambition the magazine of the Association of MBAs their wisdom on trends shaping business and how to ease stress at work.

      As well as lots of business and HR press there was a heap of fantastic hits in the lifestyle consumer press including Stylist where Petra Velzeboer author of Begin with You shared her tips of boosting wellbeing and Natalie Boudou author of HumanForce reassured us why it is ok to be emotional at work.

      With Father's Day making it's annual visit Lianna Champ, grief counsellor, funeral director and author of How To Grieve Like A Champ spoke to BBC Radio London why it can be a tough day for those bereaved and also shared her sage advice in the Mail Online on how to find the right words when speaking to someone who is grieving.

      It was great to hear so many of our authors and experts on the radio, Yda Bouvier, author of Leading with the Right Brain, spoke about right-brain thinking on BBC Radio London and a final media moment for Lewine Mair, author of Tapping Feet on BBC Radio Ulster brought her brilliant book publicity campaign all about supporting her husband with dementia to a close. It has been a true privilege to work with her and share her story.

      The Book Publicist go to Prison!

      Book Publicists Escape from Shrewsbury Prison

      Breaking News – on 19 May the entire team at The Book Publicist got arrested by the police and were locked up in Prison, all except Durga who did a runner to Spain!

      A huge thank you (I mean, uproar) to Shrewsbury Prison for hosting such a horrible (hilarious) Escape Room experience for The Book Publicist crooks. The surly prison guards locked us up and threw away the key. But they didn’t keep us down for long…

      Not just amazing publicists, our canny team worked together to solve clues and unscramble codes, utilizing our brains and our bravery (at one point our Director Ella had her hand down a toilet). Racing against the clock, they broke out in the ‘Nick’ of time!

      Rumour has it that the sneaky crew flitted to a secluded country house where they hid and enjoyed a night of food, fizz and games before their innocence was proven and they live to promote another book!

      Winners of The Business Book Awards 2023 Revealed

      An incredible night for business books and authors

      On the evening of 16 May, the much-anticipated winners of The Business Book Awards 2023, in Partnership with Pathway Group, were announced at its Annual Gala Dinner held at London’s The Drum in Wembley.

      After whittling down 300 entries from around the world into a shortlist of over 100, a panel of expert judges pick the winners and runners up in each category and the Business Book of the Year 2023 is selected from their winners by Head Judge Jacq Burns.

      This year Jacq Burns was delighted to announce Leader as Healer by Nicholas Janni (LID Publishing) won Business Book of the Year 2023.

      Nicholas Janni, who also won the Leadership Book category said:

      “I am deeply honoured to receive these awards and take them as a very strong affirmation of the work of healing and awakening that more and more of us are bringing to the corporate world and beyond. The world is terribly broken. We urgently need leaders who embody deep, soulful, heartfelt presence - bringing service to the greater whole as their primary commitment”.

      The Business Book Awards are recognised for their drive to make the business book world as inclusive as possible, celebrating diversity of authors and welcoming traditional, hybrid and self-published books.

        5 MINUTES With…Paul Boross

        'I’ve worked in the comedy world for a lot of my life'...

        We’re excited to be working with Paul Boross on the campaign for his new book, Humourology. We asked Paul our 5 questions to find out more about him, his book, and his vision:    

        1. Pitch in 10 - sell us your book in less than 10 words
        Humourology - the science of using humour to create competitive advantage.  

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?
        My late father, because one of the themes which frequently comes up with my guests is the influence of their family background on both their use of humour and the career which followed. The themes of resilience and looking at life from a different angle come up time and time again when I talk about my father, and perhaps if he could read the book then that would bring the story full circle.  

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?
        I’ve worked in the comedy world for a lot of my life and more recently I’ve connected that with the corporate world. It felt like the right time to bring those areas of experience together and share my knowledge with others. Obviously, enormous pressure and financial inducements from my fabulous publisher were a factor too.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.
        I actually played the lead Ewok in Star Wars The Return of the Jedi. It wasn’t originally a speaking part until George Lucas heard my joke about the Rabbi, the Nun and the Wookie and decided to make it part of the movie. It only made the DVD release though due to censorship issues in North Korea.  I’ve been a pop star, film star, stand-up comedian, business psychologist, author, TV presenter, keynote speaker, political advisor and still the most important and rewarding role that I’ve had is as a father. The only downside is that my son, Sam, is threatening to follow in my footsteps, but fortunately he’s much more talented than me.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?
        I plan to travel to South America to trace the source of the knock knock joke. I feel that this will open many doors for me. After that, I want to make Humourology the number one resource for organisations all over the world to create better, more productive and more fun workplaces.

        "We need capitalism with a conscience..."

        We’re excited to be working with leadership experts Mike McLaughlin and Elaine Cox on the campaign for their book, Braver Leaders in Action. We asked Mike our 5 questions to find out more about him, the book, and the vision: 

        1. Pitch in 10 - sell us your book in less than 10 words 
        It addresses the existential threats that we all face. 

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 
        There are so many people to choose from. Every politician. Every leader of state. Every FTSE CEO. However, if I had to pick one person, I would say the current CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. (If I could pick more than one person, I would also add the equivalent for other countries too). However, focussing on one individual: The Chamber of Commerce is an extremely powerful governmental lobbying group. However, they are not without their critics e.g. green businesses. The CofC membership includes ExxonMobil. Google, Facebook, and Pfizer. If the CofC CEO were to embrace the messages in the book and spread those ideas across the membership, then that in turn may shift exactly what the CofC is lobbying the Government about. It may also help prompt the leaders of all member organisations to look closely at their cultures. As we say in the book, we are not against capitalism, but we need capitalism with a conscience. It is now no longer enough to pay lip-service to the pressing needs of employees, customers, the planet and its inhabitants. We spend a huge amount of our working lives in corporate environments which should be fair and ethical. Many companies talk about creating psychologically safe places to work, and yet treat their staff badly. Many companies are keen to display their green and planet friendly credentials, but are in fact myopically obsessed with the bottom line. I think that individuals may learn, when they reflect and step through the framework and exercises in the book, that they, or those around them, are far from living their lives and conducting their business in a way which is truly aligned with their values. I think that the book may provide a wake-up call, and a road map for the best way forward. In the book we say, profit by all means, but not by any means. We must think about our legacy. We must think about future generations. The time for low empathy short term decision making is over. If we could get genuine buy-in from powerful groups, organisations, and individuals, we really could change things quickly and markedly. Imagine a genuinely supportive work environment, honest and authentic leaders, companies with a conscience about what they are doing to all the people impacted by them, and of course the environment. Imagine companies who were lean, clean and efficient, not driven solely by profit, but also driven to do the right thing. 

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book? 
        That’s a long story. The essence of this book began with the previous book which was co-authored with Elaine. It was focused very much on coaching; however, we always knew that there was more to say. And so, since the publication of that book, but much more intensely over the last four years we began to have more directed conversations, ask questions, and noted down answers. We began to see that there were trends, threads, commonalities. We had a realisation that whilst we absolutely must gain the support of large corporations, politicians, and heads of state to change the way we do things, there was also a lot of superlative work already being done at a grass roots level. These ‘unsung heroes’ were already demonstrating how to behave in a principled way. These people may not be household names, but they were/are fighting the good fight, acting with integrity, making moral, ethical, and brave decisions. They were/are not hiding within a hierarchy, or behind an impressive title. They were being vulnerable, making that little part of their circle of influence better, one behaviour at a time, one day at a time. It seemed to us that although these individuals were not particularly well known, their methods and ideas could be highlighted to perhaps inspire others. And that’s where the book’s framework came from. There was an iterative and collaborative process at play, with a concomitant delve into the research literature. And many people have been involved – many more than are directly referenced in the book. We hope to inspire those leaders who may not be on our TV screens (yet) to know that they are making a difference, and to support and perhaps inspire them, to let them know that they are not alone. We also hope that through time, to see others acting immorally, unethically, inauthentically, and selfishly, with a greed driven agenda, will become repellent to almost everyone. In that way the decent people and businesses will be supported. Others will wither. A societal and cultural change is required. 

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 
        It’s difficult to know what to write here, so hence I’ll stick with a very short story – and a snippet about me. I ‘met’ Paul McCartney once. It was quite surreal. I was in a Private club in London, about to give a talk in one of the meeting rooms. Paul McCartney appeared in the Foyer; he was about to meet with some friends. It was just not the done thing to invade his privacy in that environment (although I’m sure he would have been gracious about it). I could have gone into crazed selfie mode, but I think everyone needs a bit of down time, and so managed to restrain myself. There was only the two of us in the foyer, and when he saw my look of recognition, he smiled with a knowing look, perhaps it was actually more of a very slight laugh at my facial expression. He held my gaze for a couple of seconds then moved on. And yes of course I now kick myself for being so polite – although because of that, perhaps Paul remembers it! Snippet: I am a keen photographer. I also draw and paint. 

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you? 
        I do suspect that there is more to write about, perhaps a follow-up book where we explore some in-depth case studies. In the immediate future, I recently set up a Community Interest Company, and the goal is to work with larger organisations, promoting and teaching some of the ideas referred to in the book. However, funding from that will be directed towards helping individuals, groups, communities, and smaller businesses, to utilise resources that they would not normally have the capability to access. These resources would be in the form of coaching, mentoring, and workshops in the areas of mental health, emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-leadership.         We asked Flavia our 5 questions to find out more about her, her book, and her vision:

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?
        This book is for anyone who has been through devastation lately - anything from heartbreak, divorce, or job loss to losing a loved one, home trouble or even the impact of a pandemic.  This witchy survival kit will help them navigate, understand, and transcend the Dark Night of the Soul. This book is a journey that will take them through Darkness. As they meet the Dark Goddesses responsible for each stage, they will uncover their own shadow side, embrace their inner dark traits and heal through magick and ritual - to know themselves fully and to be healed, whole and TRANSFORMED.  

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?
        Many years ago, I was guided to leave my husband in pursue of my life purpose - to help others to grow spiritually. I was led far away from my loved ones to a place where I would grow in many ways. However, what I did not realise was that for me to grow and know myself fully, I was forced into a situation where I eventually didn’t recognise who I was anymore. I felt completely isolated, suffered bad mental health and depression. In my misery I became overshadowed by an energy. It was strong and powerful. The Dark Goddess, the instigator of the Dark Night of the Soul, gave me promises of transformation.   At first, I was taken on a Dark journey until I lost myself. I then worked with the Dark Goddess in ritual and magick in a bid of rescue. On completion, and after keeping notes about my experiences I felt led to write a book to help others understand what the Dark Night of the Soul is, how to recognise the archetypal behavioural attributes of each Dark Goddess who instigates the nightmare to bring one down to their lowest ebb, and how to survive the sacred darkness.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.
        When I was a little girl, I could hear the angels singing and would meditate next to trees. I grew up in the woods and used to play with the Fairies. I also played witches and I’d tie my friends up to trees and make pretend potions. I used to dance for the Fairies in the woods and make up fairy dance routines. My mother ran her own Dance Academy, and I became a fully trained ballerina and tap dancer. When I was 13 years old, I successfully auditioned to play Louise Von Trapp in the stage version of the Sound of Music and went on to star in many musicals across the U.K. such as Lily in Annie, Val in a Chorus Line & Bonnie in Anything Goes. I also used to regularly entertain the troops on stage at their bases. At the age of 32, I quit the theatre to focus on all things magical.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?
        I have 10 books and 10 oracle decks out there and am always busy writing and promoting at shows, events and on social media. I’m giving ‘Reclaim Your Dark Goddess’ talks at covens, festivals, and events this year, including at Witchfest International to promote the book. I shall also be giving talks and appearing at the Faery Fayre, Glastonbury and the Mind Body Spirit show, NEC in October. I’m also a Rockstar Witch - I sing with Daughters of Gaia. Next gig festival for pagans and witches in September.   Meanwhile I’m also promoting my latest oracle Deck ‘Oracle of the Witch’ (out Oct 22) and the 2023 Witch’s Diary. My next writing projects are the 2024 Witch’s Diary and ‘Elemental Witchcraft’ book. Life is for living your dream.

        We’re excited to be working with grief expert Corinne Laan on the campaign for her book, The Art of Grieving. 

        We asked Corinne our 5 questions to find out more about her, her book, and her vision: 

        1. Pitch in 10 - sell us your book in less than 10 words 
        It offers the reader ways of finding meaning after a loss. 

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 
        Adults with a loss experience are searching for new approaches to explore their grief and find meaning which is a key element in the grief cycle. The loss experience can be any type of loss not only the loss of a loved one. The book is written as a self-help guide offering the readers practical ideas to navigate the myriads of emotions surrounding a loss. It offers the readers essential mind body connection practices which not only provide solace but encourage the readers to move forward, find joy again while keeping precious memories alive. 

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book? 
        The story behind this book is the death of my sister at a young age. This was my first heartbreak and it had a great impact on my life. The death of my father in 2015, nearly losing my son in the same year and my own ill health were the catalyst to keep on writing. I felt at the time of writing and still now that there is a great need for us to find healing, that heartbreak is all around us often well hidden within the layers of daily life. The book Big Magic: How to live a creative life and let go of your fear by Elizabeth Gilbert was a great source of inspiration and helped me find my creative flow. 

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 
        I love anything which involves creativity. My hobbies are many and include making jewellery, painting with watercolour and gouache. Colours bring joy and are a source of inspiration for me. I love a good walk in nature too, preferably alone where I can fully connect with my surroundings and I love birds especially colibri/hummingbird. 

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you? 
        I am currently working (still in the very beginning stages) on a set of healing affirmation cards which I think will accompany The Art of Grieving well. I would love to be able to create the artwork myself to accompany each card.

        Celebrations all round at The Business Book Awards 2022

        May 19 2022

        This week saw the unveiling of the much-anticipated winners of The Business Book Awards 2022 announced at its Annual Gala Dinner in central London.

        We were delighted to be the PR partner for the awards again this year and thrilled that many of our authors were shortlisted and four took home an award including Bernard Marr who won in two categories and took home the overall book of the year prize!

        The event was held at the lavish 8 Northumberland Avenue just off of Trafalgar Square and was a glitzy night with a rainbow of drinks on offer and the most delicious Indian cuisine!

        There were 300 entries into this year’s awards with authors from around the world entering books on topics from leadership, to diversity and inclusion to advice for start-ups and change and sustainability.

        The shortlist of 116 had been decided by a panel of expert judges and revealed at an event in Birmingham earlier this year.

        The judges had picked one overall winner from the winners of the categories and were delighted to announce Business Trends in Practice: The 25 + Technologies that are Redefining Organizations won Business Book of the Year 2022.

        Winner, Bernard Marr said: “I’m so excited and incredibly humbled to win the Business Book of the Year 2022 award among so many amazing entries. I would like to thank the organisers and sponsors of the awards and everyone involved in creating the book, especially the amazing team at Wiley. It’s so wonderful to get recognition for something I am so passionate about: sharing my ideas and experiences about future trends in business and technology.”

        Founder of the Business Book Awards, Lucy McCarraher said: “This year is the fifth anniversary of the Business Book Awards and a significant milestone in that everything has doubled in scale since we started. We had 300 entries in 14 categories – up from 150 entries in 6 categories in Year One.         2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        The ideal reader is a Senior Leader, any gender, aged between 35 – 50 in a corporate or large-scale organisational setting.

        This reader has around 15 – 20 years’ experience, has been ‘successful’ in terms of climbing organisational hierarchy and yet has a few steps to go to reach the ‘c-suite’. (C-Suite minus 1, 2 or 3 levels).

        This is a leader who wants to make an impact, believed that as they progressed in their career this would be the case, but is finding that their impact is being overshadowed by too much work, being too busy, not being able to manage the ‘politics’ of the organisation (and finding this distracting).

        This leader is struggling to find a model of leadership to which they aspire, they aren’t sure they want what they can see above them and they feel frustrated and sometimes unsure of the point of it all. They often feel their team aren’t delivering what they need them to and they feel they are constantly under pressure to deliver and perform, but are struggling to connect with a sense of purpose and fulfilment themselves.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I have always been interested in the human element of work. I fundamentally believe that every individual has gifts, creativity, collaboration to bring to bear and the role of a leader is to create the conditions for every individual to thrive.

        I spent over 25 years of my career as a Human Resources Professional working in global multinational, large scale public sector and high growth entrepreneurial organisations. This provided me with a unique perspective upon which to observe practical leadership in action. There are some truths:

        1. Leaders are not prepared for the job of leadership in a practical sense.

        2. Leaders often haven’t experienced great leadership themselves

        3. Organisational hierarchies and structures are in place to organize work, however in many instances hierarchical or leadership position is leveraged as power positioning

        4. Leaders are simply overwhelmed

        5. We are not making progress on some of the critically important aspects of our working lives. Wellbeing, Representation and Inclusion, Sustainability, Creativity and Innovation.

        I wrote this book for Leaders to re-discover and explore what a simplification of their leadership position might look like and how to create greater intention and fulfillment for themselves and their teams. I also wrote this book for myself. Not only was I an observer, coach and supporter of leaders, I was a leader myself grappling with exactly the same challenges and issues, curious to grow my practice and develop a better way. Work is so much of life; I want to help to make that better.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        My introversion has been my superpower. If you had told me I would think this as a child or young adult, I wouldn’t have believed it. Labelled as shy and often feeling very left out, I always believed that this was something which would hold me back in life and in work. However, what I have come to learn is that the skills of observation, listening, making sense of situations before speaking, kindness, a calm disposition, have all been the very qualities which have enabled me to bring my biggest contributions and when I am in a situation where I can truly be myself, these are the qualities that I know others have and continue to value.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I have a love of learning and exploring human behaviour and meaning. It is a continual journey for me and I am excited to be opening up this exploration with others too through more writing (my second book is scoped out, not written yet!) and through my programmes where we get to re-invent and re-ignite our passions for leading our lives well and leading others. I have three programmes that I am launching this year,

        1. A programme building on the concepts in the book to help leaders bring this to life in their working lives;

        2. A programme looking at how to re-ignite purpose, passion and impact into the second half of your career and

        3. A brilliant exclusive retreat programme in collaboration with Beingworks for senior leaders looking to re-boot, re-charge for themselves and their teams.

        Stories are emotions. Can machines develop powerful stories? Find out! 

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?  

        That man reading in a subway car. Or that woman having a coffee in High Park while she flips through her book. In other words, an ordinary person (not an AI specialist) who realises the importance of society understanding what is behind these AI scientific and technological developments. In particular, those related to automatic story generation. This book is an open door to the past, present and future, that allows the reader to, in an easy way, explore and reflect on how humans have produced story machines. Knowledge is power.  

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book? 

        The book grew from a collaboration between Mike and Rafael at the University of Sussex. After completing a PhD on Cognition, Computers and Creative Writing, at Edinburgh University’s Department of Artificial Intelligence in 1984, Mike went to Sussex to lead research into AI and Creativity. He ran projects on AI story generation and supervised Rafael for his PhD on MEXICA: A Computer Model for Creativity in Writing. Rafael’s MEXICA program is the first software to implement a model of human creative writing. For the past 20 years Mike and Rafael had intended to write a book on computers as storytellers.  

        By 2020, a new generation of neural network AI programs was demonstrating scarily creative powers of storytelling. We decided to write a book, for a wide audience, to dig into the long history of machines as composers of poems and stories, reveal humans as storytelling machines, show the power and limitations of AI story generation, and speculate about how machines might tell stories of their life in the metaverse. 

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.  

        Mike has a lifelong interest in empowering people of all ages through innovative technologies. He led a team of students, in collaboration with Kodak, to develop the world’s first multimedia smartphone to be demonstrated to the public – on BBC Tomorrow’s World in December 1999. You can see the BBC broadcast on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nAmCH2QSlw&t=246s. The device combined a multimedia tablet computer, digital camera, mobile phone, internet browser and pen handwriting recogniser. His other projects included helping children create video games (in 1979), testing an early forerunner to Zoom for tutoring at a distance (in 1982), developing a Writer’s Assistant with British Telecom (in 1989), and designing the FutureLearn platform for massive open online courses (in 2012). 

        Rafael loves to play his guitar, sing with his friends and compose songs. His father, who is also a composer, was the one who taught him to play the guitar. His aunt was a professional singer and you can admire a statue of her in one of the main plazas in México City. While studying for his PhD in the UK, Rafael, along with his Argentinian friend Sergio, sang at parties, pubs, and cultural events. There he experienced first-hand how human creativity is a wonderful tool for sharing life experiences and creating bridges between different cultures and ideologies (features so much needed nowadays). So, it's no surprise that when Mike was looking for a student to work on AI and creativity, he couldn't resist. He believes that story machines are useful tools to connect people. 

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you? 

        AI storytelling has reached a fascinating stage. Computers can write compelling and engaging prose, for blogs, news media, advertising, education. But the programs don’t know what they have written. They have no way of reflecting on their output – to decide if it’s truthful or false, boring or engaging. They have no power to revise what they have written. AI neural networks can perform amazing feats with words, but they have no common sense knowledge of the world – they don’t know what makes a baby cry, or humans fall in love. At best, current commercial story generators are senseless and amoral, at worst dangerous.  

        Some researchers are calling for a new generation of AI that combines performing with mental reasoning. Will such programs be able to write great literature, or does truly creative writing need to come from a body and mind alive in the real world? To take the next big step, AI researchers, cognitive scientists and human storytellers will need to work together in understanding how the creative mind works, how to tell a good story, and how to design machines that write from experience. We hope to follow and contribute to that leap forward in machine creativity.

EXPLORE will inspire and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone to be courageous in their risk-taking to try new things and take one step at a time.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I was inspired to write this book because for over ten years I have interviewed inspiring people and told their stories. One day my literary agent and I were discussing new book ideas, and when I ran a few by her, she said, Sue why don’t you write about yourself. Your adventures will inspire others, and it’s about time you did that. Previously I had shied away from writing my own back story but it now felt that this was the right time, having been able to reflect after many years on what the key pieces were in my own story and how they all fitted together. Having done the inner reflection, I felt comfortable to share it with the world.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        Readers might be surprised to know that I don’t like being cold. At home I am always the one to turn up the central heating.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        The next chapter is to write a follow up book to this one. The focus will be on exploring one’s inner world, and what I have learned by doing that and helping others to explore their inner world. It will integrate all my coaching knowledge and experience of personal development in the last twenty years.         The core audience for this book would be any senior decision maker working in the finance industry, whether that is banking, private equity or venture capital. However, I have also received some great feedback from media representatives, researchers and analysts that are interested in the evolution of the financial industry and system, so I hope it is also interesting beyond the C-suite.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I wrote the book to share the experience-based methodology I have created based on my career working in the financial industry over the last 20 years.

        In recent years I have spent a lot of time working on projects focused on turning around, growing/scaling and building businesses in the sector, so I wanted to share a hands-on guide to help professionals understand some of the core issues that the industry is facing right now.

        I think it is a particularly interesting time for the finance sector, so I wanted to offer something of a unique view on the dynamics between the incumbent financial institutions and emerging financial technology (FinTech) companies, as well as providing some insights into recent technology trends and innovation that some leaders still aren’t embracing fully.

        I have always loved to see the world, and have been told I am a very “international” person. My roots might be in continental Europe, but I am married to a Persian who grew up in Australia, currently live in London and my career has taken us to four different continents – so perhaps it shouldn’t be surprise that my daughter has three nationalities.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        The publication of Transforming Financial Institutions book was linked to the founding of Evolve Enterprise Solutions (EES), my own company that I set up as an independent platform for entrepreneurial and special situations with emphasis on the financial sector. The firm stands as an umbrella company for my managerial and advisory mandates in operational private equity and venture capital.

        The book outlines the value-creation methodology that I established over the last 20 years. I will continue to work as an executive (Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer or Chief Restructuring Officer) with focus on transformative technologies; specialising in start-up and growth companies and lead the integration of their (emerging) technologies in the ecosystem of the incumbents. My current emphasis is on the financial industry with its institutions and technologies, but a lot of the lessons in the book are equally applicable across other industries too.

        A close friend sharing practical, heartfelt advice about stress management. 

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?  

        “I am twenty-five years old and I have been in the world of work for just over two years. I must admit that this it’s turning out to be quite a lot harder than I thought from a mental health perspective! Beat Stress At Work hit my desk in the nick of time. Written by someone who has ‘been there and done that’, it explained exactly how I was feeling and why. But best of all, the book provided me with some no-nonsense and practical ways for preserving my wellbeing before things started spiralling out of control.”  

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book? 

        Three things. Firstly, even though I will say so myself, I have an excellent CV when it comes to mental ill health. I have experienced stress and anxiety for most of my life. I have had panic attacks and nervous breakdowns and I have even made one unsuccessful attempt on my own life.  I have also looked after others with mental illnesses. Secondly, it seems that I am not alone. Vast swathes of the working population appear to have experienced or are experiencing some kind of mental ill health, and this shows no sign of abating. In particular, thanks to our Covid-19 friend. It has become apparent to me that the more I am able to open up about my own story in public, the more I am able to persuade others to open up and share their own stories. One thing I know for sure is that it’s always better out than in. And thirdly, I just happen to love the act of communicating through the written word. In tandem with my skills as a management trainer, this gives me the ability to express tricky concepts simply. 

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.  

        I have spent the majority of my working career as a management trainer, delivering courses for some of the largest organisations across the world. The job has meant me standing up in front of groups of 20, 30, 40 people, often for days on end. And on residential courses, this has involved me socialising with the same people during the evenings. I have been lucky enough to love my job. But here is the thing. I am fundamentally an introvert at heart and get as much pleasure and satisfaction doing things on my own as I do being with other people. I recently read a fact from a global study which stated that almost 60% of people are more introverted than extroverted! So, I am not alone! The reason why this self-awareness has become so important to me is that it now shapes my life both personally and professionally. I have a much clearer understanding of where I gain my energy from and where it dissipates. I know which situations to embrace and which ones to avoid. I can probably say, hand on heart, that this has had the single most positive effect on the preservation of my mental wellbeing. 

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you? 

        I think that I have a novel in me that revolves around the topic of mental health! This would be how it opens……. 

        “This is really embarrassing. I mean really embarrassing. What would my parents say if they were both still alive? How proud would they be of me right now? I wretch for the first time. I mean I’m almost 29 years old for God’s sake. I’m supposed to be a proper grown up, able to make big decisions, deal with problems when they arise, face up to the occasional confrontation. But no, not me! Here I am like a terrified little schoolboy cowering away from the classroom bully. I wretch again. It’s not as if anybody is going to hurt me, is it? No-one is going to stand up, walk over to me and punch me in the face. Although that would cause quite a stir, I guess. OK, so there may be a bit of shouting, a few looks of disgust now and then, and no doubt an attempt or two to make me feel like I haven’t done my homework. I wretch one more time but nothing is coming up any more. My stomach is empty because I haven’t eaten all day. Too bloody nervous. And then I hear the door open slowly. I know who it is. I told Martin to come and get me when it was time. “Steve, it’s 5 to 11. They are waiting for you in the boardroom”. “Thanks, Martin” I say, with all the enthusiasm of a man on death row getting his final call. I take my head out of the toilet, exit the cubicle and look in the mirror at a pale, gaunt and beaten up face. Somewhat comically, I straighten my tie as if that is going to make a blind bit of difference. Martin is holding the door open, carrying the laptop with the presentation in the other. “Ok, let’s go”, I say. “Lamb to the slaughter”

        Fascinating cases within my career of assessing mentally disordered offenders.

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        Anybody who has an interest in true crime and psychology. Those that want to understand how childhood trauma and experience can lead some people to suffer serious mental illness or down a path of criminality, or both. Those who want to understand how specific psychiatric symptoms might lead to violence. An overview of some heart-breaking cases where mental illness has robbed some people of control and even criminal culpability leading to serious violence, including murdering children. Those are interested in the inner workings of the machine that rehabilitates the most dangerous psychiatric patients and has to decide when to discharge them safely into society.

        3. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        I have had quite an eclectic series of hobbies in the past. This includes two short periods of my life where I have attempted to be a stand-up comedian. I had reasonable success on the open mic circuit, though I ultimately had to give it up because I didn’t have enough time to do that as well as my career and spend time with my family. I went to battle rap against another doctor on a hip-hop TV game show – Don’t hate the Playaz. I won!

        4. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I focus a lot of my time and attention to make YouTube videos on my channel, A Psych for Sore Minds. This is similar in content to my book, though has a much more playful, jokey and humorous tone. I have provided soundbites for numerous true crime documentaries, and I’m hoping to grow my profile, ideally featuring on my own show eventually.

        'At 56 I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to become a racing driver'

        1. Pitch in 10 - sell us your book in less than 10 words

        What founders really need to know about fundraising and investors.

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        My ambition for the book was to sell one copy to one person who didn’t know me. On the face of it that doesn’t sound very ambitious. But if you look at it then two things have happened, it means that the book got published and it was useful to someone who bought it on it’s own merits and found it useful. My ambition was to be helpful so the ideal reader is someone who needs help and the book helped them in some way.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I have been involved in a lot of fundraising. Coming out of a particularly bruising fund raise, I saw how earlier negotiations under a different regime had painted the business into a corner for future fundraising. There was little or no room for manoeuvre and the managements hands were effectively tied in the negotiation. The temptation was to write an anti-investor rant but of course there are some really good investors out there, and I then decided even I didn’t want to read a rant. So, I decided that a guide that prepared founders and companies for the process would be much more useful.

        It’s called The Money Train because once you take investment it is a proper ride with a known destination. If you get it wrong it can be a runaway train, get it right and it can be a smooth journey.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        At the age of fifty-six I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to become a racing driver. I had six years of racing against people a lot younger and a lot more experienced than them. I am a competitive person, so I worked hard employing business principles to my racing and my racing training. I ended up winning races, beating those eighteen-year-olds and having a wonderful time. It was a thing in my life that I was getting better and better at. I have retired now but getting to do it was an unexpected bonus and a pressured pleasure.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        At the moment I am still chairing businesses and helping a range of companies fulfil their potential. And I want to continue doing that.

        But there are things I can see in the not-too-distant future that will take me to the next chapter in my life.

        I want to write a book about my racing experiences and how I used business disciplines to get win races. I have also just been added to the faculty at Manchester University Business School and will be teaching as part of their MSC and MBA courses. Some of that will be at venues around the world.

        A leaders guide to empathy, humanity & navigating our world

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        I would choose the CEO of any business because change and impact start at the top. Our world needs leaders who understand the need to rebuild humanity into our businesses and to balance humanism with capitalism to create the regenerative leadership of the future. I believe my book creates a compelling set of stories and evidence to do so!

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        After 30 years of declining empathy levels, the deeply sad realities and contentious events occurring in our world led me to write this book.  I have a deep sense that this is a conversation we all need to hold. We only need to look around ourselves to see what that picture looks like. Anxiety levels are on an ever-upward spiral, nearly 400,000 million people suffer from depression and we live with the deeply unsettling truth that the second biggest killer of our youth, globally, is suicide. When our children are killing themselves rather than choosing to stay on the planet with us, we have a problem. 

        Empathy is evolutionary and it is a critical skill in connecting and protecting our workplaces and our teams. It is a skillset that leaders and managers can use to truly impact society and its leverage is the new benchmark for any organisation that gathers humans behind a mutual goal. Empathy is innate, but the choice to use it is in each of our hands, and I hope my book encourages more businesses to consider this critical skill.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        I live in Sri Lanka and work remotely from a tropical island currently going through a financial crisis and power shortage – working in the heat and the dark! But beyond that, I believe that empathetic influence is this decade’s most critical human and scientifically validated skillset. The ability to connect authentically as people has the power to not only change our business environments but to change the shape of our world. Writing this book allowed me to share the story of the perilous journey I took to lead a broken business to a thriving one with humanity at its heart and the impact that had on my reality, as well as all those that worked with me.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        The closing paragraph of my book summarises how I see the future and my commitment to waking up each day to driving more understanding into our businesses, teams and societies.

        “May this book be the beginning of your own conversation and practice of humanity’s greatest trait, or if not so bold, may it simply have been a reminder that in practising empathy you will always be doing the right thing. For your business, for your team, and for the world.

        My immediate focus is to launch the third season of The Empathy for Breakfast Show podcast which will further open up the conversation to high profile guests from all over the world. We asked Cathy our 5 questions to find out more about her, her book, and her vision:

        Helping young people sidestep the traps of intimate relationship abuse.

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?

        If my book helps ‘just one other person’ then that is the one person I would like to read my book.

        Many of us rush to pair up with a partner, seduced by their compliments, attentiveness and love bombing, without noticing the layers of grooming, coercion and control that are at play. That is, not until we feel trapped and don’t know what to do.

        This book will enable you to relate these negative and abusive behaviours to your own relationships and support you to reflect on how these experiences may have impacted you and how you feel about yourself.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        As a young person in an early abusive relationship, I believed that the dreadful things my partner did to me were my fault. I never told anyone at the time because I thought I must have done something wrong and deserved to be treated this way.

        This shaped the choices I made in relationships through my early adult life. However, when many years later I started working as a counsellor with survivors of domestic abuse, I realised that everything my clients were telling me about their experiences, I had experienced myself in several relationships.

        So many of the people I have worked with have wished that someone had noticed, warned them or talked more openly about the reality of coercive and controlling behaviours. What if someone had shared with them some of the insights in this book and supported them to make healthier relationship choices?

        I wrote this book with respect to that younger part of myself, and for the thousands of young people and adults with whom I have worked across three decades, that experienced direct harm and suffering at the hands of the person that was supposed to love, care and respect them. Your experiences will inform others.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        For many years, I worked as an actress. I went to a casting for a commercial, but on this occasion didn’t get the job. What I didn’t know, was the director for that job had me in mind for a couple of commercials in Norway. I didn’t need a recall as the director said he simply needed to find me someone to play my husband.

        I arrived in Oslo and met the actor playing my husband. We went for dinner there with an old friend of mine who asked us how long we had known each other. We explained it wasn’t what he thought. That we had literally just met that day. We worked together on the two commercials playing a slightly comedic couple and got on really well.

        From there, we saw each other back in London and the rest is history. We had a daughter and have been happily together for 20 years.

        We sent the director a photo of the three of us when our daughter was born, reflecting that it was the most suitable casting of a husband!

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I have just co-developed the new ten-week VOICE Programme. It is for adult victims of intimate coercive experience. The programme aims to address the various behaviours of a controlling partner both in situ and post-separation and to offer relatable psychoeducation on trauma and normal stress responses, enabling victims to learn more about self-regulation and self-care. The programme is committed to weaving in the themes of intersectionality and the additional barriers this presents to victims, theoretic models which help victims to identify where they are at in the cycle or stage of domestic abuse both pre and post-separation and the use of digital technology to further compound abusive dynamics. Who knows a book may be on the horizon!

        I also have a few book ideas for children. One addressing experiences of loss and grief and the other two are stories for a slightly younger age. If only I had more time…

        You! My book isn’t a story book, there’s some really potent wisdom that could have a huge impact on your understanding of life and our collective experience so you are the most important person to me right now, and that’s where change starts, right here with you!

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        My inspiration to write the book was simply an overflowing creative passion and expression! In 2010 I was writing what was meant to be a 2000 word essay for a yoga training, and got carried away, felt floods of information wanting to come through me. I asked if I could hand in whatever I wrote, and ended up with 40,000 words! Over the years seeing how valuable my knowledge was for people who I treated with acupuncture or came to my yoga classes, I felt the impulse to complete it as a book with all my additional awareness garnered over the intervening years! What I particularly like about the book myself is that it’s not just a theory book, each chapter contains my own personal story relating to the subjects in hand so you can see how my personal development has gone hand in hand with my own increasing knowledge and awareness and it’s grounded in reality. It basically contains all the golden nuggets that aid my own life experience – understanding the soul, interconnection, the mind, relationship dynamics and healing practices. It feels like a potent combination of the force of inspired creativity mixed with extremely potent knowledge!

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        I really love the diversity of who I am! I feel life, and part of true personal development isn’t all about taking the edges off of character but instead celebrating, embracing and being proud of our individuality and quirks! Accepting what we are given while polishing it up. So I love watching how one moment I’m in the treatment room with someone delivering super sage healing wisdom or going to conscious dance classes and the next moment I can’t wait to get home to check the football scores, what’s going on in WWE (wrestling!) or put on some Indie rock. I love the fact that although I’m a fan off all things natural, I grew up in Dudley, right in the Industrial heart of the West Midlands. People are often surprised that I can be equally as proud and accepting of all the parts of me, but it’s the only way since then it enables you to see the best in you! (without also forgetting that we all need some polish!)

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        This phase for me is all about the application and sharing of the knowledge, getting back out onto the coal face as it were after a lot of time in the office! I’m very lucky in that I facilitate retreats at Moinhos Velhos, a top 10 rated juice detox retreat in the Algarve so I get to spend lots of time treating, teaching and giving workshops and there is nothing I love more than doing that. After so much background work on the book, I just want to concentrate on sharing now and helping people move forward in the same way the knowledge has helped me in my own life. Fortunately, as I’ve practically worked with helping people over many years I get to see the impact the skills and knowledge I have can motivate in others and it builds a tremendous sense of satisfaction. Doing what you love and getting gratitude back from others for doing it, what is better than that! On another level, I can see an online course also possibly on the horizon, how quickly I flow towards that horizon we shall see!

        For real change, leaders must address the positive and negative.

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?

        Audience of one: President Barack Obama

        The aim is to help leaders and organisations, in any sector, acknowledge the need to look at the positive and golden and the shadow and negative which is often known about but rarely surfaced, acknowledged and tackled. It is a very massive audience base, but these problems are widespread.

        There are descriptions of the psychology of golden behaviours, e.g. honesty and shadow, e.g. lying, bullying. The reader (individual or organisation) learns how to review their use of golden and shadow, preparedness for change and how to grow and develop. Expert voices from many sectors also provide useful perspectives.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I have worked in many sectors from the private (co-facilitator for responsible leadership programmes for PwC), human services (NHS England), humanitarian services (Red Cross and Red Crescent and the UN). In each, regardless of my seniority and responsibility, I saw, and experienced, positive and negative behaviours demonstrated by junior and senior personnel. It was the negative that always had a greater impact and made it difficult to achieve the purpose of the organisation. It was necessary to anticipate that such behaviours would exist and that they would need to be tackled (sometimes subtly) to get the work done. Doing this was often very tiring, draining and those energies could have been better used elsewhere.

        On retiring from the UN, I decided to do some work on this topic and write something. My early thinking steered me towards considering both the positive and negative aspects of behaviours as I felt this was necessary and rarely done, either in real life or in the literature. Looking at both is more likely to lead to a better balance between them and more chance for healthier leadership and organisations.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        Writing and collaborating on the book taught me a lot about my own approach to life and the golden and shadow sides. I was reminded of what is important to me, how I want to live my life and the value of history. Major influences were my great grandparents and my father.

        My career has not been systematically planned except that I knew I wanted to study psychology when I was a teenager, and eventually become a clinical psychologist. I moved into leadership and the humanitarian sector by chance. For example, I was going to Sri Lanka to set up a sabbatical in December 2004 and the Asian Tsunamis happened. I still went, volunteered and that eventually led me to working with the UN.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I want to continue developing ideas from the book, to help people learn more how to build on their golden side and address the shadow parts in a comfortable yet challenging way.

        I am very much enjoying writing and producing material and want to do more. I don’t want a full week.

        Enjoying my freedom as a retired person is important, living without the need to use an alarm clock most days. I am re-connecting with good friends and family who I have missed. Another ambition is to increase my cooking skills and do some courses.

        Daniel Kahneman is a founder of behavioural economics who outlined how normal it is to make errors in day-to-day decisions. Comparonomics is about how we make errors in how we think about progress, and how that causes us to pursue things that will never make us feel better, so I would love to get his thoughts on my book.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        While doing my PhD in economics 30 years ago I decided I didn’t want to be an academic. I’ve had lots of fun since then as an inventor doing start-ups, but it has always bugged me how obviously wrong normal economics is about measuring how things are progressing. I wrote this book over the course of about 8 years as a counter argument, but then left the book sitting for 3 years to see if anything dated or could be improved on. I had assumed someone else would point out what I’ve argued in the book but they haven’t, so I guess I had to.

        The reason I’ve written it in such an accessible way is that understanding these things can make a big difference to people’s lives. Sometimes there is no need to change government policy or create new laws – you can look at life quite differently and I find it useful every day.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        When leaving school in the yearbook I said for my probable career I wanted to be an inventor but they said I had to put something serious. I only managed a real job for 18 months then have been working as an inventor ever since.

        Some people would be surprised to know I’m a champion avocado grower. I am also an earthquake refugee – but in a good way, as I moved to little village after the Christchurch earthquakes and lots of ideas for the book came while stand up paddling in Akaroa harbour.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        Enjoying a non-profit project helping develop technology to protect New Zealand native birds, and hopefully enjoy talking to people about the ideas in this book.

        Someone who has struggled for years to lose weight, been confused about what to eat for good health resulting in a poor relationship with food and a negative impact on their mental health. My book simplifies weight loss and drowns out unnecessary diets that aren’t backed up by the science. It also logically and scientifically puts your eating choices in perspective, liberating you from anxiety and guilt and enables you to realise a positive relationship with food.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        Over the years I’ve had thousands of DMs from people confused about what they should be doing to lose weight. Most had been going round and round in circles of toxic diet culture which has seriously affected their mental health. So many people had thanked me saying my Instagram posts had helped them achieve their goals and repair their broken relationship with food, that I wanted to write a book about these issues to help more people. So far the feedback I’ve had has been incredible!

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        I used to play semi-professional cricket when I was younger. In fact, from the age of 5-24 cricket was my life. I went to Australia 4 times to play as an overseas player and South Africa once. But by my mid 20s it was clear I couldn’t make a living out of it and had to look elsewhere. Fortunately I’d been exposed to the best strength and conditioning coaches around and learned a lot. Naturally, I did my qualifications to become a personal trainer and took it from there. It wasn’t until I was 30 that I started posting properly on Instagram and I certainly had no idea I’d ever reach 1 million followers!

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        It’s been a very busy 2-3 years writing 3 books and developing a nutrition tracking app. After a little rest, I’m keen to explore more books and keep improving my app so that it can been one if the leading fitness apps around. I want it to reflect my brand and messaging too. Ultimately, it would be absolutely incredible if Netflix made a documentary or series about some of the issues discussed in my books. It could be a watershed moment where the disordered diet advice we currently see on TV is finally replaced by the body of evidence and empathy towards the viewers. I have no doubt this could change the landscape in how millions of people reach their goals and do so in happiness.

        Clear, accessible Chi-Kung with life-changing impact, relevant to anyone.

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?

        This is a tough one! I think if only one person was going to read it, I would choose Amanda Pritchard, who is the CEO of the NHS UK (yes I had to google her name!) I would love for some of the common sense approach to empowered well-being to become a part of what we offer for free in this country. Wouldn’t it be great if we pro-actively worked with our hearts, heads and bodies to find good feeling instead of waiting for our bodies to go wrong?

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I was inspired to write this book by my Chi Kung students and Equine Facilitated Therapy clients. Horses listen to how we are in our whole body – not just our heads, so Chi Kung and Mind-Heart-Body exercises are relevant here too.

        I wanted to be able to give people something written that was going to be useful – not clever or complicated, but just really useful. Many of the books on Chi Kung are hard to read, wordy and verging on academic. I initially started writing the book as a set of cards that I could share with students and clients but it turned out that I had more to say than I thought, and the book grew organically.

        I included discussion on topics such as: having a practise (elusive for most of us); how to try but not to force. I also wanted to include a section on how to live the practise, how Chi Kung and it’s philosophy can be applied to all aspects of life, as well as some descriptions of forms to practise. This ended up turning into a book in three sections, how to practise (the Art), what to practise (Chi Kung), and how to live it (Living)!

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        Although I have had what might sound like an interesting life, it’s the inner exploration that has been the most fascinating journey for me.

        I lived the rave scene in Manchester, spent a year in India, lived in a Tipi in Wales, spent two years on a sailing boat with my young daughters, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, rekindled my childhood love of horses – this is an exploration of what is visible and seen.

        The inner exploration though, who I am beneath the layers of conditioning, what my experience of consciousness is, my experience of life, connection and relationship – this is like exploring the deep dark depths of the oceans, uncharted territory where you can only see what’s in front of you at any given moment.

        This is why I am planning to continue my studies with a more thorough exploration of the therapeutic journey. The basis of experiential Chi Kung is to be present with the experience, and any nuances of that I can explore really grab my interest – it makes me a bit nerdy, but I find it endlessly fascinating.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I’m looking forward to doing some teaching clips to put on my website and YouTube – it’s always easier to practise if someone is talking you through a posture or form, and as Chi Kung isn’t quite as widespread as yoga, not everyone will have access to a teacher or class. I’m starting to think about writing something about the experience of being with horses and ways that we can explore ourselves in that frame and how it relates to Taoism– although very few people have access to a horse!

        An honest, hype-free take on self-development for normal people. Interested?

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?

        In writing this book I particularly wanted to help people who would normally NEVER look at buying a self-development book, and think this stuff is just ‘not for them’.

        Having researched the topic extensively myself in writing Do One Thing, I know how much of it is a little inaccessible at times – or feels very over the top!

        However, a lot of the basic principles are so useful - and if I can help even one more ordinary person reappraise their life a bit and get closer to achieving their dreams then it has all been worth it.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I have been so lucky to have an amazing career in marketing and digital that has taken me all over the world. I’ve seen some amazing things, met some incredible people and done things I could never have dreamt of growing up in Barry (way before Gavin & Stacey made it famous and cool!!).

        However, balancing all of these great things with constant travel, pressure, balancing personal commitments AND self-care has been challenging for me in the past. After one particularly draining period of time I began to research self-development and motivation more and more as a topic.

        Over time I began to use the principles I was learning about and adapting them to my own needs to be put in a much better self-care regime - and begin to work on building a life even more like the one I wanted.

        As part of my own thought process I was determined to come up with a framework that would allow other people like me to get ahead. As I began to work on that, Do One Thing and the idea of developing a ‘TARGET SELF’ emerged.

        A lot of late nights, early mornings and coffee later … here I am!

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        I am honestly mainly focused on my family, writing and coaching practice. However, I’d be a terrible personal-development strategist if I could not come up with something else wouldn’t I!

        I guess one thing not a lot of people know about me is how much I’m into sneakers. I’ve been fascinated with them since I was young and continue to be so today.

        I do collect them a little (not as much as I’d like too!) and love to see the trends for different brands and styles constantly emerge (or remerge!). There you go – I’m a secret sneaker head!

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        Wow, 2022 and beyond is already looking so exciting for me. I am so blessed to be able to help people in this way - honestly, I don’t take it for granted.

        I’ve got two more books in the pipeline for release next year – one a unique take on personal branding and another a new way to look at business strategy.

        Assuming it’s possible, I’ll hopefully be doing more in-person speaking at events in 2022, which is something I love to do and have missed greatly.

        Apart from that, more continued focus on my family, friends and giving back what I can. Very exciting times.

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why?

        I would choose Brené Brown. She has spent over two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She is regarded as an authority in her field. Brené uses storytelling to convey her findings in a way that is compelling and accessible to a global audience. My book explores qualities that are adjacent to her field of study. It would give her a different perspective on how courage can be employed effectively to improve our interactions and relationships with others.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        In January 2020 I did some reflective work and refined my purpose as, ‘To create intimate environments so that people thrive’. I wanted to do something in line with this and decided to write a book about something I am passionate and know something about. My work expertise is centred on leadership and executive coaching, however, there are so many books on those topics that I decided I could not compete.

        I am a Buddhist and part of our mission is to spread the teachings so that people can reveal their inner Buddhahood. I am not an evangelist, and I wanted to find an authentic way to help others to help themselves and reduce their suffering. The essence of our Buddhahood is courage, compassion, and wisdom. I noticed in my conversations that people rarely felt courageous or wise and they more often related to empathy. I believe these qualities are inherent and wanted to show this in a way that was accessible. I felt that sharing stories of ordinary people displaying these qualities would inspire my readers, enable them to reflect on their own lives, and start to see how they possessed and used their Three Companions.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Cambridge.

        That may seem strange given the work I do now. However, from my undergraduate days on, people have looked to me for help and advice about their personal problems. When I was doing my PhD, I was the only person in a large research lab whom the plumber stopped to talk to, the cleaner brought in flowers from his garden for, and the temperamental lab technician would willingly help. I didn’t understand what it was that enabled me to connect with a wide range of people in such a positive way.

        As a management consultant, I learnt tools that helped me understand the psychological factors that influenced a person’s behaviour. This gave me some structure to what seemed to come naturally. I specialised in leadership development and executive coaching. Later I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism. This form of Buddhism is about action to alleviate suffering in ourselves and others. This philosophy resonated with who I am and what I do in my work and personal life.

        The Three Companions is a melding of these two worlds for me.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        This falls into two buckets:

        1. Application of the findings from my research – The Three Companions is a way of reaching a wide audience with my message that courage, compassion and wisdom are essential qualities that enable us to have meaningful conversations about difficult, emotive, and sensitive topics in a positive way that engenders change in our personal and work lives. One application of this is in developing courage, compassion, and wisdom in organisations. I have created a modular programme that enables this and successfully run the self-compassion element. I want to help create more humanist organisations by running the entire programme.

        The second application is to create safe environments to foster dialogue to surface and resolve conflict.

        2. Further research – In this first study, most participants were from the UK, with a smattering of individuals in other countries, including the US, South Africa, Uganda, The Netherlands, Ireland, Malaysia. I am interested in studying how the Three Companions are used in different countries.

        Another study topic is to gather stories about how courage, compassion, and wisdom are used to create more inclusive organisations/societies.

        Mr or Mrs Middle Manager. These are the guts of the organisation. They are the future leaders. It’s time to de-hero leaders and make leadership more about the team than the leader. I’d like to inspire this generation more than any other.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        Leaders of teams, at all levels, and in small, medium or large organisations need more help in how to get the best out of their teams. The buzz word continues to be ‘leadership’ but where’s the word ‘team’? My book establishes leadership as an enabler of better team working rather than an end in itself – for personal status, gratification or financial reward. My book is the first ever book that provides a code or sequence for leaders to follow so they can build better teams, which is what leadership is all about.

        I wrote my book in response to what I felt was a massive gap in the market. There’s plenty of books out there on what makes a great team, but not one of them gives a sequence to follow to do this effectively. Those that attempt some kind of roadmap provide no science to support their sequence. My book is supported by the science.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        I tried my hand at professional tennis but wasn’t very good. After a first degree in business studies I then turned to psychology to understand myself and the world a bit better. I was the first person in the UK to achieve chartered status as both a sports and occupational psychologist. My work is now predominantly with businesses but I still read the newspapers backwards.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        I’m already working on my next book. It will be about using the code I’ve developed in the way meetings are conducted. My current book describes the end to end process of building a team. My next book will be to take the same code but apply it to run the most amazing of meetings.

Lead Beyond The Edge takes that person through a journey from the exciting ‘I want to do it’ stage – whatever your ‘it’ is - all the way to the exhilarating ‘I did it!!!’ one. Inspiring and equipping you with the scientific strategies you need to overcome any challenges, understanding what’s going on in that head of yours, and making it happen!

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I cannot think of anything more special than seeing someone shift: that moment, when their eyes sparkle, their tone of voice changes, their cheeks get rosier because they suddenly believe that they can make it happen, and then do it, overcoming any challenges that arise, is why I do what I do. This fuel drives me. Every time this moment happens, I know they are now leading beyond the edge.

        But doing so requires inner strength to step up. Wherever you are at, there is always that next level to step onto. And that step always requires a shift in our mindset; breaking through to that higher level involves breaking through fears and insecurities, challenges and doubts that come up at those moments. I call this ‘the edge’. The edge can be scary, and that fear can keep you from achieving your full potential.

        So, whether I’m keynoting, training or consulting, I live for that moment. And I wanted this to happen more and more. Enters this book, Lead Beyond The Edge as my solution for you. As for the who, as you’ll read in the book and discover thanks to my stories (I use storytelling a lot!), my grandfather.

        I’m shy and introverted.

        Wait, what? Yes, you read that correctly! You see, I’m also confident and passionate: that’s why I’m so comfortable on stage doing what I LOVE most: helping people like you achieve their extraordinary by using the power of your mind to rewire your brain for success.

        So, looping back to my surprising fact…! This book is divided into 5 parts and their chapters that, in order to support the science behind the framework, I’ve decided to name as circuits and wires, since as soon as you start on your path, you’ll be building and strengthening new circuits and wires in your brain.

        And our first circuit focuses on our beliefs. Everything we want to achieve starts in our brain, ignited and fuelled by our beliefs. Confidence is one of the mindset facets I work a lot on with clients; the top 2 personality traits often listed and incorrectly considered to result in low confidence are shyness and introversion. These do not hold you back from confidence. And as you now know, I know this intimately! Makes you think, right? Paying attention to what you believe in consistently ensures that your beliefs support your goals.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        So many things!!!

        And first and foremost, being there for my readers as they read and experience this book.         Express your maternal anger safely and assertively whilst repairing afterwards.

        2. Audience of One - If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        My audience of one would be Alex in the Netflix show Maid. A mother who is feeling overwhelmed and alone and out of control. A mother feeling many intense and powerful feelings and yet still trying to be a good mum. She is a mother who could use some compassion and access to self-care and support as well as some support in being more assertive with her anger. Or Donald Trump, a parent who has far too much un-reflected rage!

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        As cliched as it sounds, my children inspired me to write the book. I am sure I am not alone in feeling that I want to be the best mum I can be to my children and if my anger is getting in the way of that then I need to figure out how to navigate my anger whilst being a mother to my lovely boys. I grew up afraid of anger and I never wanted to be an angry mother as I felt that would make me an unsafe mother. Not wanting to be an unsafe rageful mother to my boys inspired me to write the book. I have now learnt through speaking to many inspirational mothers that we can be angry mothers and safe, loving, nurturing mothers. There is space for both.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        I am the daughter of a successful record producer who always encouraged me to step in the spotlight and use my voice. I have spent many hours in a recording studio growing up and from that perspective have seen the many different ways humans express their emotions.

        I am mildly dyspraxic which means I cannot ride a bike.

        5. The next chapter - What’s next for you?

        The next chapter! I want to write more around how childhood trauma impacts us as adults and as mothers. My next book is going to be empowering women to think, feel and speak after childhood abuse and trauma.

        I am also starting a podcast with a male colleague (who is also a parent) around parental anger and communication.

        I am developing an online course on paternal anger for parents.

        Highly Engaged teams win. Here’s how you can build one.

        2. Audience of One -  If you could choose ONE person to read your book who would it be and why? 

        The Leadership Star is the book I wish I had had when I was starting out as a leader. It would have saved me many years of learning through hard experience, and given me a memorable framework I could have used to bring more consistency and effectiveness to my various roles.

        Not having a time machine to go back and give it to myself, I’d hope that another young leader who wants to make a difference to their organisation is able to apply the Leadership Star framework to turbocharge their career, growing into larger roles that then inspire other leaders to create meaningful work for all their people. In other words, my hope is that this book creates a ripple effect by growing better leaders.

        Eventually I was asked by a colleague to share what we were doing, and boiled it down into five things, all of which started with C. To make it memorable, I called it the Leadership Star, based on five points of a star. That turned into a presentation I gave to managers in my businesses; they applied it and found it worked, and eventually it became one of the key tenets of Westpac’s Leadership Development Program.

        Along the way one of my communications advisors suggested I put it into a book, and the COVID-enforced lockdown seemed the perfect opportunity to do that.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I’m not a trained manager—I don’t have an MBA. So when I was put in charge of my first business, managing 1000 people, I felt quite uncertain about how to go about it. The one certainty I had was that if I could attract the best people in my industry to work for us, and create an environment where they could thrive, then we would win. So I started paying attention to leaders who had built strong engaged cultures, watching what they did, and began applying the lessons in my own business. It worked, our staff engagement scores went up, and we became the highest performing business in the company.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        I once had lunch with Her Majesty The Queen. As CEO of a large global bank (Westpac), I’ve had the opportunity to meet many leading CEOs and entrepreneurs. But my role as CEO of Coutts brought with it some particularly interesting experiences. While I can’t disclose what we talked about, I can say that her knowledge of current events and interest in looking ahead to the future was exceptional.

        5. The next chapter - what’s next for you?

        After 30 years in corporate life, I’m enjoying the chance to work with startup founders and their teams to scale up and take their solutions to the world. In addition to leadership team and CEO mentoring, I am currently the Chairman of Beforepay, a Sydney-based pay-in-advance business; Reejig, an AI-based HR talent management system, and another Fintech business that is building an exciting niche lending proposition. It’s nice to have the brain space to think about how the explosion in new technologies can create new opportunities to serve consumers and support businesses as they grow.

        Reading this book they’ll learn being sensitive is ok, modernity is a mess, magic is possible, there are 7 paradigm-shift medicines for fulfilment, advice for a happy relationship, tips for intimacy, and kindness leads to pleasure.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        I always knew I’d write a book… As a little girl I was surprised my brother told me he knew that in the future I’d write a book and he’d be interviewed on the radio about it!

        Half a lifetime ago, in my mid-twenties, I began writing the first part. A raw, emotional, rant. I knew I’d write the second part when I was healed and evolved… and that is how it happened. One poem from the first draft is in the final book.

        A few years ago I began writing again… I had no choice, my heart knows something that it wants to share. It poured out of me, night and day.

        The book is woven from a lifetime of experiences, insights, conversations, books, teachings, etc. I’m delighted that despite the downs and ups of life – and sometimes life was really hard and I didn’t think I would make it – I have written this book – and it is being internationally published.

        It feels as if Life itself co-created the book – and supported me without an agent being published by Findhorn Press. Apparently, this is unheard of! It has its own life now, to go out widely into the world.

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you.

        Outside of writing, speaking and working with clients, sharing this rich, sensual, embodied way of being, I enjoy a simple life. My fiery daughter, Ruby, is now at secondary school. She loves to sing and to be with animals. I love to dance wildly, kickbox, and be in oceans and forests. I’m enjoying life in relationship with Grae, an engineer and transformational coach, two black cats Mars and Pluto, and the Chocolate Labrador Olive. We all spend a lot of time walking, boating, cooking, eating, making music and staring into the ever-changing flames of the wood-burning stove (in winter) and (in summer) the light dancing on the surface of water.

        5. The next chapter - What’s next for you?

        I’m excited to spread the visionary message of the 7 medicines far and wide. The book supports and empowers people struggling with the uncertain intensity of modern life, with simple, profound and practical tools, to improve their relationships, health and work. You can take the right steps forward, not with mental maps based on the past, but the wisdom of your own body.

        I’m looking forward to meeting more people in 2022 at the online book read-along sessions, in-person book tour, and talks at The Scientific and Medical Network, Watkins Bookshop, festivals, summits and other events.

        Vladimir Putin.

        Many people who’ve bought the book are already liberated makers and players, but Vlad is such a rigid old strategist and control-freak it feels like he was never even a child. I’d love him to stumble on this book and be inspired to let loose and play with possibilities ..Then I’d like him to bump into President Xi and give it to him as a gift.

        3. Behind the Book - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

        Three things inspired me.

        First, I was tired of hearing people put ‘play’ into a very limited box, even though they use play metaphors in all angles of life, and make games out of everything they touch. Second, I really feel imagination and collaboration are the only things that’ll get us all out the quicksand we’re in; and these are the tools of players. Lastly, unlike other creative projects I’ve had, I wanted to make one thing from start to finish without gate-keepers or committees, so it really ends up roughly the way I pictured it (selfish of me, I know!)

        4. Guess what? Tell us one thing that readers might be surprised to hear about you. 

        I’d rather be drumming.

        I’ve loved bringing this book to life, but it’s been like working as a medieval monk. A certain amount of that focus and intensity is great, but then I need the complete opposite. In my case that’s sitting behind a drumkit, listening to other musicians, and letting my hands and feet get their instructions directly from my ears. Drumming is really sit-down dancing, and making music with people is about as good as life gets.

        5. The next chapter - What’s next for you?

        Hopefully this book will open some opportunities to talk to a broad range of people and figure out how a more playful mentality could help reshape things for the better. It feels like we’re in an amazing (ok, slightly scary) time of huge change, and there really are no boundaries which can’t be questioned. It also feels like kids should be educating adults, so let’s start a new school on that basis. Funding channels are open now, just call me.

        This week we begin the PR campaign for Ilana Estelle’s new memoir and motivational guide Cerebral Palsy: A Story (RedDoor Publishing). The book describes the physical, mental and emotional challenges Ilana suffered as she grew up, a child of the 60s, coping with disabilities she wasn’t aware of.  Ilana didn’t find out she had cerebral palsy until aged 46 – and autism 10 years after that. Her struggles made her feel misunderstood, isolated and alone, and it was only when she was diagnosed that she found out why. We will be looking to set up interviews in the mainstream media for Ilana to tell her story, and be offering advice articles on coping with disability and adversity.
